Dementia OK

Testimonials

I have known Sylvia for nearly 3 years. In that time she has been helping me ‘care’ for my mother who has the onset of Vascular Dementia.

Sylvia is herself a very caring and considerate person who looks after my mum wonderfully.  She is also diligent and professional so you feel your loved one is in very safe hands.

The best thing for me however, is that my Mum considers Sylvia a wonderful friend and so I couldn’t wish for more.

SUPPORT COMPLETE JUNE 2023 : Natalie is now happily residing in a Care Home in Swindon where she is regarded as a sociable and popular resident ! 2024

My name is Phyllis Mason and I am 84 years old; I was diagnosed with alzheimers 3 or 4 years ago.

Once I got over the initial shock, I realised I still have masses of brain activity that fills my life; I use a 7 days a page calendar to jog my memory.

Sylvie understands exactly what makes me tick, which is reassuring, and we go to places where I have lots to laugh about with people of different abilities; the groups I attend are around art and music, which I particulalrly love; indeed I can still recall the piece and name of the composer after hearing a few bars.

We also go shopping, to talks, exhibitions and other places of interest to me.

I have used the service Sylvie offers for four years now; she is always  reliable and punctual and very calm and caring, initially with my mother and now with my husband, with whom she engages and supports in activities he enjoys and are beneficial to his health and well-being..

But the most important thing is, she really understands the Dementia condition in all its guises so I can really relax when I am out and she is is charge as you know the person you are carer for is in safe, competent hands which is SO important.

Also it means you have someone knowledgeable to answer any questions you need answers to  regarding certain  situations in your caring role that have not arisen before.

Thank you Sylvie, Norma Tubb,Pewsey.

CURRENT 2024

My father, Robin, had cognitive disease which had an impact on his ability to function normally including mobility and some memory and word finding issues. This was very frustrating for Dad because he was an intelligent, sociable and gentle man who loved to meet people. He adored to go out for tea/lunch and learn new things - particularly when related to history.

As Dad's condition worsened, so the impact on Mum, his only carer, increased and it became apparent that Mum needed a little time on her own; Sylvie, with her knowledge and experience as an Occupational Therapist, took Dad out for short trips to visit places of relevance to him; Dad really enjoyed these and particularly the stimulation. It also gave him the opportunity to discuss worries with somebody who was not immediate family and who understood his concerns and could occasionally suggest solutions. This is critical for people whose independence is being eroded by a degenerative disease.

Sylvie's involvement made life easier for both my parents.  Dad's trips out with Sylvie gave him the stimulus and independence he needed, whilst Mum was able to relax in the complete confidence that Dad was being well looked after. I cannot thank her enough.

I was introduced to Sylvie by a friend when my mother was going through the Alzheimers diagnosis process and since that time she has been an invaluable support.

Sylvie's specialist and bespoke service makes the time she spends with my mother hugely important for her wellbeing. Her understanding of dementia, as well as my mother's needs and interests, means that she is always thinking of enjoyable ways to stimulate mum's mind. This includes keeping me informed of any local events that will interest both my mum and I e.g. talks, musical events, new dementia related groups to attend, or which Sylvie will take mum to.

Sylvie is my go to person for advice when I am struggling with how to deal with a particular situation as well as taking mum to any routine appointments she might have.

I have total confidence in her and this security has made a difficult time much more manageable.

CURRENT 2024

Dementia OK offers a sitting service but it is so much more than that. Sylvie has a wealth of knowledge and insight into dementia; this coupled with her professional experience as an Occupational Therapist means she has so much to offer not only the client but the family as well.

She is calm under pressure and has a lovely sense of fun. She makes herself aware of the clients interests and finds appropriate activities with which to engage them. Noel has enjoyed painting, drumming, reading, observing nature images and discussing, safe gentle movement and skittles.

In caring for my husband I have learnt so much from Sylvie which has enhanced my quality of caring. She is a very reassuring presence in our lives. Sylvie`s priority is always the client who is the first person she communicates with, making eye contact on arrival. She is very aware of the client in any conversation and always talks clearly with the client and in a manner that does not patronise. She is also very aware of body language and uses this to understand how the client is feeling.
